Big Data Perishability

A problem related to streaming and to the collection and storage of big data as a whole is data perishability. Data has a lifetime. Some of it is long term, such as well-established facts in the physical and social sciences, but some of it may be measured in mere nanoseconds, such as financial transactions in computerized trading on Wall Street.

Transient data, if not processed within the time required to use it for decision making, must often be discarded to make room for newer data. Perishability puts the emphasis on insight, not retention. Historically, most enterprises chose to keep data for as long as possible and as cheaply as possible. But, for big data, ideas and policies regarding the duration and cost of retention must be revaluated because it is often just not feasible to store the information for later processing. Table 2.2 suggests a few issues that you might want to consider. Also, see the section “Storage: What If You Can’t Keep Everything?” that addresses the data storage issue.
